When I first started Internet Marketing (doing Niche Marketing to be precise), I have been
told plenty of times to select only topic that I personally like. Well, that is the most dangerous mistake newbie niche marketer is going to
make.
But the fact is, 9 out of 10 seasoned marketer that you consult will advise the same saying that by doing so, you’ll not get bored easily,
don’t expect to make quick bucks; so that you’re going to stay longer working out on that niche to finally reap the rewards. Now, I am not going
to totally disagree with this but a lot of us started doing internet marketing with the same one mission and that is to…
Quit the damn boring and stressful day job so that you can have more quality time to spend with your family and friends,
right?
Okay, and it was a coincidence that I saw a few threads the other day on the forum where people asking how to find a profitable niche and make
money from it. And I see a lot craps being discussed (IM needs time to learn, energy etc., not possible to explain in one forum post, better
doing this and that and a lot of links to “everywhere”).
Come on!
What doesn’t take time? Unless you outsource..
And there’s really no logical explanation on to why you should only target things that you love (unless you love all popular niches). Me for
example has no specific hobbies or interest and a lot of people are like me too. Even if they do, do you think that a man who likes to keep copy
of people’s identity card with unique and weird surname going to make much money online? Hehe.. you bet!
Instead, go for the “money”…
Let’s just have a better understanding of what a niche is before we go further..
Niche = A special area of demand for a product or service.
Okay, now this is my way of working out a profitable niche and build upon them. Basically, I am doing it differently from most people.
I don’t find niches. I find products and then investigate if it’s profitable and checking on the competition before getting into it.
Imagine spending your previous time working on a niche that has big demand just to find that it’s very difficult to monetize!! You’ve got the
traffic (targeted traffic) but there’s little room to monetize it. So, here’s how I am doing it (from the affiliate marketer point of view) – the
simplified version.
- Basically, you will need to go to any category in CB, Paydotcom, Amazon etc. it doesn’t matter. Find a product that you want to dip
into.
- Check the source page to see the keywords,
- Expand the keywords with Google keyword tool,
- Filter away those with less than 1000 searches / month
- Check them on Google (if there’re a lot of Adwords ads; that’s the most basic sign that people are spending money into it).
- See what pages pop up in the search results – if pages appears to be from free sites (article directories, social sites – Squidoo,
Youtube etc.), save that keywords into a separate notepad.
- Repeat for all keywords (long tailed – more than 2 words long).
- If you can have more than 10 long tailed… for that niche, it’s a profitable niche to venture.
- If you have some cash to spend, don’t build a complete website targeting the niche. Instead, setup a simple campaign in Adwords for all
keywords and check the conversion rate.
- If you can get a sales conversion of more than 1%, I personally consider that’s a good niche.
- Then you can invest in building a whole site for it; get SEO traffic and save your PPC.
- Rinse and repeat for the next niche.
I am not saying this without grounds. It’s a proven way to make money online with niche marketing and following it will in fact save you a lot
